Many of us give to multiple charities, but where does your money go? How can we be sure that it’s getting to the beneficiaries claimed by the charity? Most of us are aware that charities give a percentage of their donations to the charitable causes they are pursuing, but how can we find out what that percentage is?
These are all valid and important questions. In this article, we are going to break down a couple of ways you can find out how much of your donated money is going to where it will make a difference.
Find out Directly from the Charity
Most charities are not trying to hide what percentage of your donation goes towards their programs. In fact, most of them will even display this percentage on their website. Take this breakdown from Save The Children Australia’s website as an example:
This simple graph shows exactly where your donation is going. So, let’s say you give $1 to Save The Children, then 0.73c of that goes to their programs, 0.8c to fundraising costs, 0.8c to administration and 0.11c to commercial activity. This gives you an idea of how much of your dollar is going to the children in need.
The National charities and Not-For Profits Commission (ACNC) was launched in 2014. Before this, charities were regulated harp haphazardly by state and territory agencies, which made things quite confusing to say the least. The ACNC was established to provide a central location for an Australian-wide repository of information on charitable organizations. To date, there are over 55,000 charities registered through the ACNC. If you want to be sure that a charity under your investigation is complying under the Australian law for Not-For Profits, then you will need to keep an eye out for this ACNC registered tick:
Once registered with the ACNC, charities are required to show this tick on their website, which must also be linked to their profile on the ACNC website. This profile will show all the information available on the charity, like if they have up to date reporting. You can even access their latest financial statement and in this statement, you will find exact information on how much they are spending on their programs vs administrative costs.
When deciding which charity you wish to support, it is sometimes best to weigh up things like how much of your donation goes to the proposed programs. But this is not always the best indication that a charity is doing amazing work. You can visit one of the best restaurants in the world, that serve the most delicious menu, and yet they have high overhead costs. Some charities may be in an urban location, with higher rent prices, but this does not mean they are not doing amazing work within their community.
At Endless Love, we believe that it would be easier for the giving members of our community to have one centralized list of available charities, their programs and causes, and the percentage given to their programs. This would make it easier to compare and decide who to support, and perhaps even introduce new charities to the market that many people have not heard of.
Ultimate pleasure and satisfaction in life is when you feel good about yourself, because that is what makes us happy, and not something that happens on the outside. Happiness is within us, in our minds. It is important to have a positive attitude towards ourselves, others and life in general, especially when it seems that luck is not on our side.
Our thoughts can reach a height or cause it to sink into the depths of despair. When we think positive thoughts we will attract positive situations and people. When we focus on the negative aspects of our lives, we attract more negativity. Our thoughts are often full of positive or negative emotions and are rarely neutral.
If you want good things in your life, think positive and be thankful. Feel the joy, peace, and happiness. Keep your mind free from worry and fear. Do not waste mental energy on negative thinking. To make tomorrow beautiful, think of it today. Decide now to be happy and learn skills of rejoicing life and the world around you.
You have most likely heard of the United Nations, but what exactly do they do? The United Nations was founded in 1945, after the devastating effects of the Second World War. It was founded with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. With every country on board as a ‘party’ member, the organization works to prevent conflict by assisting parties in peace making and in creating the right conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish. Along with the maintenance of International Peace and Security, the UN also has the following aims:
Protect Human Rights
Human rights is a big priority for the United Nations. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was introduced into international law. This Declaration proclaims the fundamental rights of all peoples in all nations and these rights are universally protected by the United Nations. This protection is enforced through legal action and on-the-ground activities. You can find more information on this declaration here. As an example of what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, here is Article 1:
‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.’
Deliver Humanitarian Aid
Another focus of the United Nations, as mentioned in its Charter is: "to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character." The first great accomplishment of this kind, was the UN’s efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Second World War which devasted Europe and to which they indeed, helped rebuild.
Promote Sustainable Development
As mentioned above: ‘international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character’, involves the well-being of people and which thus involves the well-being of the natural environment. Over the years, we have seen many changes in the way in which we develop as a race, and this has grown into the understanding of sustainable development – development that promotes economic opportunity, greater well-being and the protection of the environment.
Uphold International Law
The United Nations has set the objective: “to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained". In other words, the development and respect for international law has been a key focus for the work of this organization. How do they achieve it? Through courts, tribunals, multilateral treaties; and through the Security Council, which has the authorization to impose sanctions or authorize the use of force when there is a threat to international peace and security. The UN Member States are bound by this law and most importantly, prohibits the use of force in international relations.
The UN represents one of the greatest achievements of mankind. Through its continued work in securing the safety, security and freedom of every individual in the world, it is inspiring to say the least. Indeed, there is still plenty more work to be done, but the fact that we have made great strides in achieving these types of goals, should give us hope and faith in the goodness of mankind and in our possibilities. Endless Love proudly supports the United Nations and everything they stand for.
